I just discovered there’s a Baylight Church of Religious Science in the neighborhood. Their website only differs by a hyphen from the Baylight Church Community that I go to these days. According to Yahoo Maps, the Los Altos church is only 2.7 miles away from ours in Mountain View. Wow, that’s totally confusing. I wonder how many hapless souls have been invited to Baylight (one or the other), Googled for the website, located the address of the other church, and found themselves very very puzzled the next Sunday morning. All because of one little hyphen. I was tempted to write about how different the two organizations are upon a cursory review of their websites, but the truth is, I haven’t the slightest idea what Baylight Church of Religious Science is about, so I will just be quiet.
That reminds me that I still have a copy of Mary Baker Eddy’s “Science and Health” manual which I got from the Christian Science folks in White Plaza a couple of weeks ago. Once again, I seem to know nothing about this area. Has anyone read this thing before? Eddy’s got her own rather interesting website that seems to have trademarked the phrase, “For the Betterment of Humanity.” Seeing how I am generally an advocate of human betterment and self-improvement, I should probably get a clue. Does anybody out there actually know a Christian Scientist? If I do, I’m not aware of it. =I
I don’t know them, but I know people who have family members who are … Steph and Debs had a teacher who was. They don’t believe in medicine and refuse to get treatment for stuff, can get controversial when it comes to handling kids and the law and the medical field. Come talk to us if you are really curious.
I’m not sure I know any, but every once in a while I hear about a group in the news. They are a very well-established group, going back to Eddy, as you’ve discovered. And I do know that *she* is absolutely fascinating! As a religious leader, but also as a health reformer, etc… worth looking into.
