Singapore Photos Series 1: Pre-Wedding Festivities

Okay, I finally got a chance to process some of my photos!  Here is the beginning of my Singapore Photo Series, a photojournal in 6 parts.  =]  If you’re here to catch up on the Steph and Seiwei wedding, you’re in the right place (and I’ll get you there eventually)!

This is the pool at my hosts Waiyan and Larissa’s condo.  It didn’t look super-deep, but it sure looked pretty!  I stayed in the apartment nearly the entire 2nd day of my Singapore trip in order to pore through all 4000+ of the photos Steph and Seiwei provided for me to put together 2 slideshows for their wedding.  This was definitely a working vacation!  =]

For comparison, here’s the pool area at Seiwei’s condo.  It’s multi-tier and features a set of water slides too.  Sheesh, I’m jealous!  We had a pool party here to relax before the wedding, and Brian was kind enough to lend me his spare swim trunks.  I managed to keep both the trunks and my contact lenses on!  (Phew!)

This is the room in which I slept during my stay at Waiyan and Larissa’s.  I must say, I have a new appreciation for the soft comfort of the humble tatami mat!  By the way, I learned the hard way that if leave the window upon during the spontaneous downpours of rain that occur for about 15 minutes nearly every day, you are in for a very wet surprise on the floor when you return.  Oops.

This is Seiwei and Steph pressing on with the detail planning at the rehearsal dinner at Zenden Restaurant, with Su-Ling and Pearlyn, whose name I could not for the life of me visualize while I was in Singapore.  =]  I think we pretty much took over the whole restaurant.  Other than the flutist’s special someone, I don’t think I saw anyone enter the restaurant all night while we were there.  No, not even for the all-you-can-eat lamb shank!

This is the little cutie I met while in Singapore.  You will definitely be seeing more of her.  =]  Half-Russian, half-Asian.  Now THAT is cute!

Did Brian enjoy this plate of fresh fruit after all-you-can-eat lamb shank?  You be the judge.

Anyway, just wanted to give you a little preview.  We haven’t even gotten to the wedding festivities yet.  More to come!  Please leave a comment so I know someone out there actually cares.  =]

Now, move on to Singapore Photo Series 2: Bartering for the Bride!

Singapore Day 1

I’m in Singapore now for the fabulous wedding of Seiwei and Steph!  This promises to be an action-packed couple of days.  My hosts here just finished giving me the tour of their condo and are going to bed now, so I thought I’d give you a little update.  Sorry, no photos yet!  (Hey, c’mon, I arrived around midnight.)  Here are some of my recollections:

-Stephanie was so sad when she took me to the BART station before work.  =[  This 6-day trip is definitely the longest we’ve been apart since the wedding.  Hang in there, Steph!
-I almost accidentally put $20 on my BART ticket because that’s the default amount for credit card payment.   Wow, I feel pretty clueless about these things.  I double-checked my receipt just to make sure I didn’t accidentally put $120 on the ticket or something dumb.
-Feeling really weak-kneed while standing on the BART.  Maybe it was the extra luggage, etc, but I feel like I almost fell over several times before I could get a hold of one of the bars!
-I was happy to have free Internet at SFO courtesy of Stanford.  Yay!
-There was a huge German Shepherd police dog sniffing everyone’s bags at SFO.  I kinda wondered what kind of sign he gives the officer if he finds something.  I was thinking that the dog is probably trained not to bark, since that would tip off the drug dealer that he’s been discovered.  Andrea thought maybe the dog makes a secret sign to the officer with his paw or something.
-Andrea and I couldn’t get seats together for the first leg of the trip from SFO to Narita.  The people next to me were already a couple, and the guy next to her said he absolutely had no interest in switching seats with us, so oh well, so much for that.  We spent the next 10 hours in separate cabins, which allowed us each plenty of time to be anti-social and watch the onboard movies and read.
-I caught up on 300 (the movie) and The Zodiac.  Movies on the little screen are still automatically less enjoyable, but hey, it passed the time.
-JAL has this “original” drink served onboard called “Sky Time Yuzu”.  I figured this might be my only chance to find out what kind of concoction it was.  It turned out to be a refreshingly light citrus mix.  I ended up ordering it multiple times onboard.
-JAL also offers complementary beer and wines to even its Economy Class passengers.   Didn’t see anyone get drunk off the soju.  =]
-JAL served SUPER cold ice cream sandwiches.  The first bite hurt quite a bit, and Andrea reported that passengers around her had to gnaw persistently at the bar to really bite into it.   I bet Steph would’ve loved these.
-A lot of the stewardesses assumed I spoke Japanese, which was a bit confusing at times, like when one of them was apparently telling me something like, “I apologize profusely for dishonoring your family name due to our extremely inauspicious shortage of the beef entree,” and I said, “Yes, beef, please.”
-We had a fairly long layover in Narita Airport, but once again, I didn’t have time to actually step foot out of the airport to see Japan.  I couldn’t even find the Playstation Gaming Center that was here when I stopped here maybe 8 years ago.
-The strangest item I came across in the Duty-Free shops at Narita were these gel-filled rubber balls that had the consistency of a thick water balloon or like those stress balls.  It took me a moment to realize that it was supposed to resemble a single female breast.  Okay…
-When we arrived in Singapore right before midnight, Brian was already waiting.  He immediately handed me a SIM card and a set of instructions for my time here, in true secret agent style.
-Brian also had a car.  Apparently, you don’t need a special international driver’s license to be able to drive in Singapore short-term, which I find very very scary.
-Brian didn’t actually know how to take me to Waiyan and Larissa’s place, so he kinda just dropped me off on the street somewhere random halfway between the airport and my destination.  I ended up having a good chat in Cantonese with the taxi driver who took me to the other side of Singapore.
-Waiyan and Larissa have a very nice and new condo in what used to be the boonies, at least according to the taxi driver.
-W & L were so kindly waiting for me even though it was already 1:30 AM.  They immediately hooked me up with maps and phone numbers and Internet access.  Thanks!

Well, that’s it for now.  It’s almost 3 AM here and my internal clock is all screwed up and I’m planning to wake up at 7 AM so Larissa can show me how to get to the various places I’ll need to go this week via the subway.  Time to get some sleep!

Does anyone have any travel tips for me?

Jen and Jason: Wedding

In this post, I’ll be covering the fabulous wedding of Jen and Jason, which took place last weekend in “one of the FIRST great Wine Country establishments”, the Auberge du Soleil.  And what a wedding!  When I first arrived and left my Prius with the valet, there was a gentleman about my age who immediately waved me over to the table he was sitting at by himself next to a fountain.   “You must be Kenneth,” he said calmly.  My jaw dropped.  Holy cow!  How did he know that?!  It turns out that the groom had mentioned to his friend before that we looked alike.  What do you think?

Eventually the guests were allowed to step out onto the patio where there ceremony would take place.  When I spied the overjoyed (or… hysterical) “bride and groom” at the altar, I wondered for a moment whether I had showed up at the wrong wedding… Luckily, it turned out that one of the young brides here was already married to the “officiant” in the photo, hehe.

After they had their turn, Steph and I took our best shot at the altar too, though we both wondered how amazingly embarrassing it would be if they started the wedding right at that moment.  Anyway, the sunlight was pretty harsh, so I should probably go back and adjust the highlight levels in this photo…

I’d heard that the famous Scott Robert and rising star Junshien would be shooting this wedding, and I had the opportunity to catch them in action.  In fact, my impression is that Junshien was the main photographer for the wedding.  Nice!  Wow, check out the double-team action!

Actually, it was pretty cool to watch them at work, and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to distract them at least for a moment.   No, I did not just paste myself into the photo!

Okay, back to the wedding.   Here is the waiting groom.  Though if I was a better photographer, the Best Man would not have ended up looking like the center of attention.  Whoops…

The father and bride entered and a flood of sunlight poured in from above them.

Jen was seriously glowing.

Here are the camera people hard at work.  The periscope shots are always fun!

Ah, the vows… I have never been up this close at a wedding.  4th row!  =]

Fast forward to the fancy dinner!  My favorite course was definitely the baby fruit salad and white chocolate passionfruit mousse napoleon (okay, I totally botched up the name I’m sure).  Steph’s scallop was definitely at least 50% bigger than mine (photo enlarged to do it proper justice).

Finally, at the end of the evening, Steph had a MV high school reunion photo.  As I snapped the shots using a camera from each of the ladies, one onlooker commented, “Wow, Kenneth, that is a PARKING LOT of cameras!”

Overall, it was a beautiful wedding that was extremely enjoyable.  Thank you very much, and congratulations, Jen and Jason!  You were made for each other!  =]

Blingo Strikes Again!

I know, I know, I’m long overdue for an update!  For now, I’ll have to keep it short.  I just won $50 on Blingo.com, just by association with my friend Wendy!  Woohoo!  This definitely beats the seven movie tickets I’ve won in the past from Blingo.  Thanks, Wendy!  Keep surfing!  =P

How do I describe Blingo?  It’s basically a skin for Google, except that every time you search, you have a chance to win a random prize, from movie tix to cash to plasma TVs.  Click the button to check it out yourself or let me know if you wanna try your luck on Blingo!  =]
